Since 2006, my project work has been inspired by psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud’s essay entitled, “The Uncanny”.
Freud defines the Unheimlich or unhomely/uncanny as,
“that class of the frightening which leads back to what is known of old and long familiar”.
The project, the unsaid…, explores nature – that apparent stillness that is present between what is seen (and understood) and that which lies beneath (the unseen, hidden and unknown aspect of nature).
The representation of nature here is in both the rural and suburban landscape, where two seemingly disparate photographs are juxtaposed together in order to create a ‘3rd effect’ or a new Unheimlich context.
The prints are displayed as back-lit panel pieces, 1188mm in length x 420mm high and the video is played on a wall-hung screen. The video can be viewed via the unsaid…(video) link.
