This residency project was inspired by specimen collections at the University Museum of Zoology in Cambridge (2007-8) and is part of a long-term visual exploration into psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud’s writings on Unheimlichkeit or what in English is known as the uncanny.
The project spirits expresses the tension between the familiar and the frightening and the Freudian fear of lifeless objects coming to life.
Embedded in resin and pinned inside box frames, the images seem part of some nineteenth-century zoologist’s collection – captured specimens attracting feelings of both fascination and unease.
All the images are available for purchase as individual prints. A 60-page book is available for sale here.
